THE POWER OF MEDITATION
The mind is one powerful instrument given to us as humans. Many of our experiences are regulated by what we think. As a believer, your walk with God after salvation is to a very large extent tied to your mind.
Proverb
4 : 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life
We are instructed to keep your heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life. The word issues has to do with outgoings or boundaries of life. This shows us that the extent at which you control your mind is the extent at which you control your life. Whatever have your mind have your life.
This is why we have several instructions to renew our mind after being saved.
Romans 12 : 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Looking at the importance of our minds in our life experiences , we can not over emphasis the importance of meditation. Progress in life experience and our walk with God is dependent on our meditation.
Joshua 1: 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Pay key attention to what is said above. We are instructed to MEDITATE on the book of the law there by make our ways prosperous. The word prosperous means to advance, be good at or be profitable in . The means that our advancement in what we do is dependent on how much more we are able to meditate. God told Joshua here that HE WILL make his ways prosperous by simply meditating and observing to do. The meditation is what will cause him to do. Remember how we started , your outgoings in life are dependent on what occupies your mind.
WHAT THEN does it mean TO MEDITATE?
The word meditate is from the Hebrew word hâgâh. It means to ponder: – imagine, meditate, mourn, mutter, roar, speak, study, talk, utter. Two key things are important in mediation, your mind and your mouth. When you meditate, you deliberately put your mind on something until it fills your heart that you begin to utter it unconsciously. In meditation, speaking and making declarations with your imaginations is key . Many times, we know how to do the reverse of this which is worrying. You notice when you are worried, unconsciously it can come of your mouth because the thought has filled your heart. Same way, we must learn to deliberately meditate on whatever we want to see progress in.
We must learn to deliberately meditate on God’s word for us to be fruitful as believers.
Psalms 1
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. note
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper
Pay attention to verse 2 . You see that the key to fruitfulness at all times is meditation in God’s word. The man that meditates on God’s word bears fruit in season and out of season.
For every aspect of God’s word you want to see fruitfulness, you take God’s word , read , listen to it and PONDER on it . Listening and reading God’s word always helps meditation. The mind will always retain what you feed your senses with. So be intentional with listening to God’s word for any area of your life you want to make progress and advance.
Do you want to advance on the miraculous? Take your pastor’s messages on miracles and stay on it. Listen to it over and over again then deliberately put your mind on it. You want to be a supernatural soul winner? Take God’s word in that line and feed your mind then ponder on it. You will notice effortlessly how it will show in your conduct. God’s word is powerful enough to cause any change. For any area of your life that you feel you are not fruitful enough, take messages and scriptures in that line and ponder on it. Start every day meditating on God’s word for the progress you desire.
We are even instructed to meditate on prophecies too not just the written word.
1 Timothy 4 : 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
In the above verses, you see the connection between your prophecies and meditation. Many times, prophetic words are conditional based on how we receive and work with them. If you are given a prophetic word, you must deliberately meditate on the word, speak the word over and over again and even pray with the words. Prophetic words just like the written words are given to us so we know what to think on and say. We see in the book of Daniel that it was when Daniel became intentional with Jeremiah’s 70 years prophecies that it came to pass (Daniel 9:2). Daniel set himself to fast and pray having discovered by reading Jeremiah that the years of captivity are over. This is how we war with prophecies. Never be casual about words of prophecies. War with prophecies. One way you do this is in meditation and speaking.
In summary, your life will always go in the direction of what fills your mind. Whatever have your mind have your life. God controls your life through His word. To see this happen, you must allow God to control by constantly meditating in the word which will lead to you doing the word.
Have you been blessed?
