THE BELIEVER: BLESSED BEYOND CURSES
The identity of the man in Christ is Christ .Whatever that cannot be found in Christ cannot be found in the believer. The life we have received is Christ. So far in part 1, we have seen that our identity is Christ. In part 2, we saw that the believer is forever unconditionally righteous in Christ. Click the links to read part one and part two of the series. In this part, we will be looking at the believer as too blessed to be cursed. Blessings and curses are in words. Can a believer be cursed ? What about generational curses? First born curses? Ancestral curses ? And all the other curses. Let’s see the truth in Christ.
WHAT IS THE BLESSING IN CHRIST ?
In understanding what the Blessing is in Christ, we will point out what the blessing is not. Many times when people hear the Blessings what comes to their mind are things like cars, houses, and wealth. If this is the Blessing we have in Christ then we are of all men most miserable because unbelievers have same things even more. It is good to have all of these but we must realise that anything an unbeliever have can never be the blessing in Christ. The word blessing is from the Greek word eulogeō. It means to ; to speak well of, that is, (religiously) to bless (thank or invoke a benediction upon. So blessing has to do with words spoken. It is from two Greek words eu which means well or good, and logos which means pertaining to speech or what is spoken or said. The word was used 44 times in the Greek text (New Testament books). None of the references refers to it as a physical possession. Let’s look at some of the references .
Matthew 5: 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Here, blessing is used as words. We are to speak well of our enemies instead of cursing them. James 3:10 , out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Blessings proceed from the mouth. This means that it has to do with words spoken. We bless with words. Heb 11:20, By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. Isaac blessed Jacob by words, not by giving him material possessions. In fact, in Genesis 27, we saw that Isaac was a very rich man. Esau lamented not because of loosing material possessions but because of loosing words of blessings.
Genesis 27:32 , And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.
33 And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed. note note
34 And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.
Esau was lamenting for loosing the Blessing from the father. This blessing has something to do with the lineage of the coming messiah. This is why it was referenced in Hebrews 11 as an act of Faith.
Romans 4
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Notice here it is called a blessing for a man whose sins are not imputed. It did not say who doesn’t commit sin but whose sins are not counted. It is a great blessing in Christ that God doesn’t deal with us according to our sins and failures. It is a great blessing that our sins are forgiven. Even David foresaw this before the coming of Christ .
Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
First in this verse we see that we are to bless the God of our Lord Jesus. We are to speak well of Him. We also see that we have been blessed with ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS IN CHRIST. Notice the word spiritual. The blessing we have is SPIRITUAL in Christ. These blessings are the words God has spoken about us. From verse 4, we see some of these blessings highlighted. He chose us from the foundation of the world to be holy before him. That is a great blessing. Verse 7 of this same chapter points out that we have forgiveness of sins. This is a great blessing. Forgiveness of sins is what we have in Christ not because we ask but because of who God is.
Psalm 133:3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
In this Psalm, we see that God commanded the blessing in mount Zion. Before the coming of Christ, Zion was a physical location. A city conquered by David. But we see that Zion is used now to represent a spiritual location which is in Christ.
Hebrews 12: 22 But ye are come unto mount zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels.
So, we have come unto zion and in this Zion the Lord commanded the blessing which is LIFE. The blessing that we have in Christ is life. Now we have the life of God in us.
WHAT OF ABRAHAM’S BLESSINGS?
The blessings of Abraham that we have in Christ is not his cattle, sheep and physical belongings. What exactly is Abraham’s blessings ?
Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Notice the blessing of Abraham here is the promised spirit. The spirit of Christ was promised but now we have it in Christ. Abraham believed the gospel that was preached to him and was anticipating to see our day for we have the spirit that he couldn’t have then. (See Galatians 3:8 and Hebrews 11:39-40). What is Abraham’s Blessing ? Is it his sheep, cattle or material possessions? Though material prosperity is important and it is God’s will for the Believer, Abraham’s Blessing that we have in Christ is not material possessions. It is the Spirit/life of God in us.
WHAT ABOUT CURSES ?
What is a curse ? First understand that curses and blessings are in words spoken. A curse is an execration, it is negative influence or words on a person, place or things. Reading through the scriptures you see that curses are empowered by devils through words spoken. We know that God can never be seen in darkness or curses. From Genesis 3 when the word curse was first used in the Bible we see that God was not the one that cursed Adam. God only told Adam what the consequence of his action is. Cursed is the ground for your sake. It was an announcement. It is not I cursed the ground for your sake. For more on the nature of God. Click these links God revealed, PART 1, PART 2, PART 3 AND PART 4.
So, are there curses in Christ? NO. You will never see any reference of the man in Christ said to be cursed. You will only see that we are blessed. Let’s look at the different curses and see how the man in Christ is blessed beyond it.
Generational curses? The question is which generation do you belong to in Christ? Many times we place more emphasis on our physical birth than the new birth in Christ.
1 Corinthians 5: 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new
Any man in Christ no matter who the man is, he turns to another man. He puts on a new identity called in Christ. This makes him a new creature. Notice it doesn’t say if any black man or any white man be in Christ. There is neither black or white, slaves or free. All in Christ are made new creatures. Many times people carry the problem of failed government or economic hardship to our identity in Christ. We know we can deal with problems with God’s power in us. We should never attribute it to a generational curse. Now, can negative things be inherited genetically or by family lineage ? YES. We have diseases for example that are inherited. The solution is when any man BE IN CHRIST and the man is seeing the symptoms of inherited problems, let the person REALISE that he in now in a new family, in Christ. Let him rebuke the symptoms be it sickness or anything then he will be free from it. It is that simple. Come to think of it, to see yourself as having generational curses in Christ is to insult God. Which generation do you belong to in Christ? It is the lineage of God. So to say you have generational curse is to say “God is cursed”. We see that it does it not follow. When a man actually puts Faith in what Christ has done he undergoes an actual rebirth and receives a new identity which is the life of Christ. That life is the blessing he has. This blessing is beyond curses.
What of curses that comes as consequences of disobedience?
The man in Christ is so BLESSED that his sins are not imputed in his account. Thu is because Christ took the full penalty and consequences of sin in his death. There are ,any reasons why a believer is free from curses of disobedience.
The first is that the his sins are forgiven. God doesn’t count his sins. This was David saw of our day that he called us blessed.
Romans 4: 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Hebrews 8: 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
2 Corinthians 5: 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation
Part of The blessing we have in Christ is that God sees us outside our actions. Though, It is very important that the man in Christ live in obedience. His make up is to be zealous of good works. He must realise God doesn’t impute his sins on his record. This is one reason why he can not suffer curses of disobedience.
It is the law that imputes sins. Another reason for the man in Christ being blessed beyond curses is that Christ has ended the law. Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Galatians 3
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written,Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Notice to be under the law is to be under a curse. Verse 10. This is because the laws have its consequences like an example in Deuteronomy 28 commanded by Moses. Verse 13 clearly states that Christ has redeemed us from the curses of the law. Christ has redeemed us from the pronouncements that come as consequences of disobeying the law. Notice it is the curses of the law not the curses of God.
NO LEGAL GROUND FOR CURSES IN CHRIST
So we see that there is no legal ground for any curse for the man in Christ.
Proverb 26: 2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. Kjv
Proverbs 26:2 As the sparrow in her wandering and the swallow in her flight, so the curse does not come without a cause. BBE
The record that is suppose to bring a legal ground for a curse to work in your life is the law. Without the law , no knowledge of sin. So there is no ground for any curse .
But man of God what if the offence was by our parents or fore fathers? No ground still for the curses. It is so bad that even if it is a physical consequence, like your father stole and you are arrested, before God, no ground to suffer for it. It is out of God’s goodness and mercy that He doesn’t impute sin. So, you can call on God for help even in the prison and you would be released.
So, is there no need for deliverance from curses? God conducted deliverance for you when you got saved. He delivered you from the strongholds of darkness.
Colossians 1: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
So all you need to know is that you have been delivered from the devil and all his works.
GOD IS NOT INVOLVED IN CURSES
Ones a man knows that God is not the one responsible for curses then he can stand his ground and enjoy God’s blessing. When evil pronouncement is given by anyone, such pronouncements are enforced by demons not God.
James 1: 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Light is stronger than darkness. God is the father of light. He is not seen in evil. So we know if it is not good, it is not God. God’s indents is certainly light. No change or shadow of turning. In that light is stronger than darkness and the blessing is stronger than curses, a believer should never be scared of curses. He should rather realise how bless he is and speak it consistently.
In summary, we have seen that blessings and curses are in words. With words we set in motion positive forces(blessings ) or negative forces (curses ). Can we say they are no curses ? No. To say no curses is to say no devils. That will be a lie. But are there curses in Christ for the Believer? NOOO. The Believer is too blessed to be cursed. Seen that curses and blessings are in words, what manner of persons should we be ? We should be speaking the blessing over us and over persons. Ignore whoever is speaking curses on you. Speak the blessings knowing that light is stronger than darkness.
